Your Ability to Contemplate Your Own Existence is the Greatest Mystery in the Universe
How do the 100 trillion neural connections in our brains work together to create the marvel of human consciousness – our unique individuality and personality? Many great thinkers consider consciousness to be the biggest mystery not just of the human body, but the biggest mystery of all the sciences.
The human brain is the most complex thing in the known universe, by far. Scientists have just begun to understand the brain. Our most advanced computer technology is very primitive, compared to the human mind.
One way to understand this is to think of the brain like the hardware part of a computer, the physical “machine”, and the mind as the software. To a great extent, our thoughts are based on what we have learned. And we can choose what we want to think about and even how we think, about the world and about ourselves.
The mind has amazing capabilities that we usually take for granted, such as vision, hearing and speech. And we can visualize and imagine things as if they are real. We have the ability to create, to make our own choices, to plan and fulfill our goals.
We each have unique personalities, and a wide range of emotions. We develop relationships, form our own values and to a great extent, create the lifestyles we want. Yet none of these things is determined solely by the physical brain. We are much more than that. No wonder it’s such a mystery!
